  2. I'm going to take a guess here, simply because there is a similar structure in one of the township cemeteries, and I see a lot of grave markers in the background. In the winter, in other centuries, a grave could not be dug in frozen earth. Folks who died when the earth was frozen were stored in the mausoleum until spring.

to both Madi/mum and Joanne... certainly has something to do with the old cemetery... however, there is a dedicated mausoleum attached to the church, home of the lairds of the land...'mausoleum' being an actual burial chamber not a 'holding pen'... that would be a mortuary. Which this could be... though it is not that big. Will find out eventually!!! Yxx

  4. I was going to say it looks like a lock up - but that seems unlikely given its location. Maybe it was build just to cause confusion!

Ohhh hellooooo and thanks... thought the photographs on the link you have given are NOT of the mausoleum as such.. you can see that at this link... it is physically part of the church building... This will be come more clear when I finally get a visit at the times the place is open. &*> Yxx

    2. This is the Douglas Mausoleum, built in 1888. The one attached to the church is for the Dukes of Argyll and is much older.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh,,,, that was not immediately 'clicking' with the link you gave, but by then going to the Family Douglas Site, 'click' it did! Not actually part of 'the mausoleum' pertaining to Historic Kilmun, which would explain the lack of info boards.

Thank you my archival pal for helping to solve this mystery!!! Yxx

  6. It's such a view into the old days. We've had discussions about burial here. We keep traveling 5 hours to see my parent's spot. Seems silly. I think of them every day.
