I don't know whether it is just me, but I have "favourite" words. Do others have them too? One of mine is "dapple" and it always conjures up an image of the exquisite play of light and shadow, in a personal interpretation no doubt, but evocative for me. I always know what dappled looks like!
Hari OM hmmm... I wonder if chiaroscuro is more fitting to your play of light and dark? Dictionary defn of dapple is 'to mark with spots and patches' such as in the hide of a roan horse, for example... or the way the sun and moon paint their light upon the surfaces they hit. So in this picture, due to the sun dappling the water (and some foliage) we have an effect created that can be described as chiaroscuro... which, I suspect, is the effect you 'always know'! YAM xx
