Danaus chrysippus, also known as the Plain Tiger or African Monarch, is a common butterfly which is widespread in Asia and Africa. It belongs to the Danainae ("Milkweed butterflies") subfamily of the brush-footed butterfly familyNymphalidae. It is a medium-sized, non-edible butterfly, which is mimicked by multiple species.

    ooops, my update cut and paste wasn't too hot... but still the keen can get the basics!

    Bill - the wing span of this was over 3 inches! Quite the beauty.

    Joanne - although wings open it IS a butterfly - it was enjoying the winter sun!
