TAKE FIFTY SIX e

Wings on Wednesday -
YAM's take on the good, the bad, the ugly and the downright hilarious in photographing birds.

In an enormous melee of mallards, I could see a white one. I didn't have my binocs with me.

The Fudge's trusty very long zoom, however, revealed it to be a male Merganzer Goosander.

The first and only one spotted this winter.

It was momentous so there will be another shot of him here next week. Does that excite you?

  1. If you are excited my friend, I share your excitement. As I expect it is the same excitement I will have when I see my first Ruby-throated hummingbird this spring.

  3. As someone who has never really mastered swimming and who hates to put her face in/under the water, I have great admiration for those ducks. But it does make me wonder what is the fascination with the underwater:)

  6. It is a male Common Merganser, commonly known as Goosander in the UK.

Thanks David - yes the goosander... we do have Merganzer here, but a bit more green a a little more crest on head and a reddish breast. Cheers - hope your trip West was joyful! Yxx
