Wings on Wednesday -
YAM's take on the good, the bad, the ugly and the downright hilarious in photographing birds.
Another magpie - for David, who likes them "all day long" 😊
Joanne asked about the negative impression perceived about magpies. It may come from the rhyme, where certain numbers of them are said to bring 'bad luck'...
Meanwhile, back in reality, they are scavengers and predators, they are omnivorous so eat berries and other vegetation, as well as bugs of all varieties, small rodents, and are known to take eggs and chicks of other birds (though this could be said for many corvids also). Non-breeding birds will flock in quite large numbers. They are very noisy (squawk and croak) and can be quite belligerent. All this may add up to a less than favourable view of the bird. Think a gang of teenagers with too much time on their hands!
Magpies have been the victims of a good deal of superstitious nonsense about them being birds of ill fortune, and other prejudices barely rooted in truth, but they are in fact magnificent birds. They are fesity, michevious and beautiful. That could be my wife, and what could be wrong with that?

They sound like our ravens...but I do like the coloring of the magpies better!
ReplyDeleteYes, they seem like ravens, which are interesting birds. Clever. And, magpies are far better looking, though ravens are handsome birds, too.
ReplyDeleteYep, noisy like crows, the scavengers in our neighborhood. But they are actually better looking:)
